With the rapid rise of Large Language Models (LLMs), many people assume that traditional search technologies will eventually become obsolete.

My experience building LAWVOT, an AI-powered legal platform, suggests otherwise.

LLMs are excellent at understanding language, generating summaries, and answering complex questions. However, they do not eliminate the need for efficient retrieval of relevant information. In fact, as AI systems become more capable, the quality of retrieval often becomes even more important.

In legal services, users expect answers that are not only useful but also traceable to authoritative sources. A persuasive answer is rarely enough. Lawyers, compliance officers, and businesses need to know where the information came from.

This is where Elasticsearch continues to play a critical role.

Elasticsearch provides:

• Fast retrieval across large collections of legal documents

• Structured filtering based on metadata, jurisdiction, dates, and document types

• Relevance ranking and query optimization

• Reliable access to source materials that can be reviewed and verified

In practice, LLMs and search engines are not competitors. They are complementary technologies.

A useful way to think about modern AI systems is:

Search finds.

LLMs explain.

Search retrieves the most relevant information.

LLMs transform that information into insights that humans can understand and act upon.

This is particularly important in high-stakes domains such as law, finance, healthcare, and regulatory compliance, where accuracy, transparency, and auditability matter as much as intelligence.

The future of AI may not belong to LLMs alone.

It may belong to systems that successfully combine retrieval, reasoning, governance, and trust.

From my experience building LAWVOT, Elasticsearch remains an essential part of that foundation.
